World War II officially began on September 3rd, 1939. WW II was started because Germany lead by Nazi leader, Adolf Hilter led an unprovoked attack on Poland. Britain and France declared war on Germany after Hitler refused to abort his invasion of Poland. During May 10 - June 25, 1940, the Germans overcame the French in the Battle of France that led to over 469,000 casualties. Then the Germans proceeded to invade Britain and began the largest air bombing campaign but did not succeed in taking the country. America joined in the war December 7, 1941 after the German's ally, Japan, bombed a military base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
