On September 3, 1939 Britain and France declared war on Germany. It wasn't until December 7, 1941that the United States joined World War II. The Axis Powers consisted of Germany, Italy, and Japan, and the main countries that made up the Allies were the United States, France, Britian, and the Soviet Union. There were millions of casualties on both sides and around 60 million people died between all civilian and military deaths. Italy was the first of the Axis Powers to surrender. Japan became the last to surrender on August 15, 1945, but WWII did not officially end all over the world until September 2, 1945.
